The Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1) exam is administered by ICC. The Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1) exam examines the candidate’s ability to be an inspector who generally has the knowledge and understand minimum standards required to safeguard life or limb, health, property, and public welfare by regulating the design, construction, installation, quality of materials, location, operation, and maintenance or use of mechanical and fuel gas systems.

Responsibilities of Residential Mechanical Inspector

• The Residential Mechanical Inspector is responsible for performing inspections of the installation, maintenance, and alteration of mechanical systems installed and utilized to control environmental conditions and related processes for one-and-two family dwellings than three stories.
• The residential mechanical inspector is also responsible for verifying the installation of fuel gas distribution piping and equipment, fuel-gas-fired appliances, and fuel gas-fired appliance wiring.
• Further, the inspector shall also have the knowledge and understanding of “soft skills.” Soft skills can be defined as personal attributes that enhance a person’s ability to interact effectively with others.

Exam Details

The Residential Mechanical Inspector exam has an exam ID: M1. The exam is an Open Book Exam. The candidate will be given 2 hours to successfully complete the exam. Also, there will be 60 questions. The Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1) exam method will be Computer-Based Testing( CBT ) and Proctored Online Testing. The ICC examination fee will be $219 USD. • The candidate is required to pay for the exam first before they schedule if they are taking a National Certification, California, or UST/AST exam via CBT or PRONTO. Moreover, they have one year to schedule or reschedule the exam without paying for it again.
• Also, please enter the Legal name only exactly as it appears on the identification you will carry before testing. Entering wrong details will not let you take your test and no fees will be refunded.
• Lastly, you must have your government-issued photo identification ready to show the proctor.

Exam Policies

Results for examinations taken online or at a testing site are available immediately after completion of the examination. For National and UST/AST Certification Exams, The candidate will have six exam attempts within a six-month period. They are responsible for paying the exam fee at every attempt. Once they have attempted an exam six times, they must wait six months from the first attempt to register again.
