For ECS Trainee Datacomms Specialist – White with red stripe
ECS Trainee Datacomms Specialist card permits trainees to work on site to gain valuable industry experience during their training. ECS Trainee Datacomms Specialist card is issued under the strict understanding that a formal industry training programme is being undertaken and that all work the trainee carries out is under supervision.
The card is issued to those applicants who are undertaking training that leads to qualification as a Datacomms Specialist such that the training should be no less than 2 years’ duration if the candidate has no previous industrial experience, but it might be shorter if the candidate a number of years industry or other relevant experience.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Trainee Datacomms Specialist card
- Must be currently undertaking a course of training that leads to Datacomms Specialist status. And, together with achievement of S/NVQ Level 2 in Structured Cabling Systems
- Secondly, they must provide a letter of support and a job description from their employer
- Must have current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
For ECS Datacomms Specialist – White with blue stripe
The ECS Datacomms Specialist card is for operators who have completed level 2 of a recognized datacomms certification and are responsible for installing and maintaining datacomms structured cabling systems. Installation of structured cabling, including UTP, STP, FTP, Co-AX, general common cables, single-mode fibre and multi-mode fibre cables with all necessary containment and associated connection units; installation of earthing and bonding cables are all tasks performed by an ECS Datacomms Specialist card holder. Enclosures with structured cable termination equipment must also be installed (such as connection units, hubs, switches, routers, patch panels etc).
Eligibility Criterion for Trainee Datacomms Specialist card
- Must have ONE of the following –
- Datacomms Specialist apprenticeship
- Award in Communications Cabling (such as the C&C 3666/3667)
- S/NVQ Level 2 in Structured Cabling Systems
- Must provide a letter of support and a job description from your employer
- And, they must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
For ECS Datacomms Specialist (CNCI) – White with gold stripe
ECS Datacomms Specialist (CNCI) card is for datacomms installers responsible for the installation, termination and commissioning of data network structured cabling and can demonstrate they have undertaken the Specialist Datacomms training programme required for the card.
As part of a team or alone, the Datacomms Specialist is responsible for the installation, termination, and commissioning of data network structured cabling. As a result, both fiber-optic and copper cable data networks should have structured cabling established in compliance with national and international standards. A working knowledge of network pathways, the use of containment, spaces, and segregation for cable installation, as well as the safe termination and testing of structured cable termination equipment, connection units, hubs, switches, routers, patch panels, and similar equipment, is required of an ECS Datacomms Specialist Cardholder.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Datacomms Specialist (CNCI) card
1. Must have completed the following:
BTEC Level 3 Advanced qualification in Datacomms Networks (Copper & Fibre) – Certified Network Cable Installation – (CNCI) with either
- BTEC Level 3 Advanced Award in Data Communications Cable Installation Copper and Fibre Optics or
- Then, BTEC Level 3 in Certified Network Cable Installer Copper and Optical Fibre
- Three years’ experience
Note: For both Initial and renewal applications the CNCI qualification must be in date.
2. Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
For ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist – Gold
ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist card has been specifically designed for operatives qualified to Level 3 in a recognised datacomms qualification and are equipped in installing, commissioning and maintaining structured cabling systems for datacomms systems.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist card
1. Must have achieved –
- Candidate should have undertaken an approved Level 3 Datacomms Specialist apprenticeship OR have passed old one of the following:
- The S/NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Installing and inspecting Structured Cabling Systems
- The BTEC Level 3 NVQ for IT and Telecomms Professionals
- The BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals
- The C&G 4520 Level 3 NVQ in ICT Professional Competence
2. They must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
For ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist (CNCI) – White with gold stripe
The ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist card is intended for senior members of a team who have direct responsibility for the installation, termination, and commissioning of data network structured cabling, either as part of a team or individually. Structured cabling for both fiber-optic and copper cable data networks must be established in compliance with national and international standards.
ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist card is for datacomms installers who have previously held the ECS Datacomms Specialist (CNCI) card and can demonstrate that they have undertaken the CNCI refresher Specialist Datacomms training programme.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist card
- Must have previously held the ECS Datacomms Specialist (CNCI) card for a minimum of 3 years
- Must have Successfully completed the CNCI refresher Datacomms training programme.
- And, they must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
Note: For both Initial and renewal applications the CNCI qualification must be in date
For ECS Datacomms Technician – Gold
ECS Datacomms Technician card has been designed for candidates who hold Advanced Datacomms Specialist together with 3 years’ experience. Applicant must be capable of designing, commissioning, and altering networks, as well as supervisory experience and understanding of developing technologies, as well as knowledge of all applicable building and wiring laws.
Eligibility Criterion ECS Datacomms Technician card
1. Must Have passed the S/NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Installing and inspecting Structured Cabling Systems with 3 years post qualification experience
OR
In case the S/NVQ is not held, the applicant must have –
- ‘ECS Advanced Datacomms Specialist’ card with 3 years’ experience
- Hold supervisory experience
- Knowledge of emerging technologies
- Capability for designing network modifications
- Knowledge of the most effective and economical way to do the job
- Knowledge of how to apply EAWR 1989, 22-29 & 31
- Then, knowledge of the IEE Wiring Regulations necessary for data cabling industry
- Knowledge of the Construction Industry Regulations

For ECS Datacomms Technician (CNIT) – White with gold stripe
This ECS Datacomms Technician (CNIT) card has been designed for Datacomms Specialists and other datacomms coordinators who manage structured cabling installation teams, with at least three years’ experience and the required level 4 qualification.
Here the Datacomms Technician is expected to manage structured cabling installation teams including operational planning and leadership. Further, this role includes conducting surveys for network infrastructure, project design and operational delivery management activities including the requirements for CDM, H&S documentation, quality assurance, customer liaison and final handover activities.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Datacomms Technician (CNIT)
- Must have BTEC Level 4 Professional Award – Certified Network Infrastructure Technician (CNIT) with three years’ experience
- Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
Note: For both Initial and renewal applications the CNIT qualification must be in date.
For ECS Datacomms Engineer – Black
ECS Datacomms Engineer card has been designed for senior operatives who hold an ECS Datacomms Technician card together with 3 years’ experience, or hold an appropriate higher qualification (Degree, HNC/HND etc.) in datacomms installation and commissioning network infrastructure.
Note all the applicants must be suitably skilled to perform the design, specification, estimation and documentation of large scale data or telecoms projects. Also they should be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of appropriate European Directives and British, European and World standards.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Datacomms Engineer Card
1. Applicant must be able to supply proof of ONE of the following:
- Must have the ECS Advanced Datacomms Technician card with 3 years’ experience
- Must have passed the S/NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Installing and inspecting Structured Cabling Systems with six years’ post-qualification experience
- Thirdly, must have a relevant academic qualification such as an Honours Degree, HNC or HND and be capable of demonstrating the following skills:
- Must demonstrate Capable and demonstrable experience in designing all parts of data and telecommunication systems on large-scale projectsCapable of specifying equipment, producing project documentation including drawings for large scale cabled LANs and wireless network systems
- Then, must be Capable of running multi-building contracts and of demonstrating a working knowledge of all standards, directives and regulations appertaining to the aforementioned tasks
- Must be capable of producing accurate cost estimates for small and large scale data and telecommunications projects
- Next, must be capable of undertaking surveys of existing systems and making recommendations for improvements to system for current performance and for future requirements
- Must have extensive knowledge of European Directives and British, European and International Standards
2. Must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
For Datacomms Designer (CNIDP) – White with gold stripe
ECS Datacomms Designer card is for those who have met the requirements of the Certified Network Infrastructure Design Professional (CNIDP) and have at least 3 years’ experience.
Datacomms Designers are responsible for the design of networking solutions in all types of structured cabling solutions, including complex network infrastructure projects. Structured cabling designs may consist of inside and outside plant and equipment, copper and fibre-optic cables with active and passive network components.
In genera, Datacomms Designer interpret customer requirements using the appropriate tools to produce compliant design solutions, as per the with national and international standards. The role can also include the development of Bid Response documents, including clarification documents, qualification statements, costings and project delivery timelines.
Eligibility Criterion for Datacomms Engineer
- Must provide a detailed employer reference, confirming experience in design
- Must hold the BTEC Level 5 Professional Award – Certified Network Infrastructure Design Professional (CNIDP)

For Datacomms Manager (CTPM) – Black
ECS Datacomms Manager card is designed for applicants who are capable to meet the requirements of the Certified Telecommunications Project Manager (CTPM) with minimum 3 years’ of experience.
However, ECS Datacomms Manager is generally responsible for complex infrastructure projects, specifically in the datacentre environment, with a focus on pure project management activities. Some of roles and responsibilities of a Datacomms Manager (CTPM) includes the management of customer relationships, using routine briefings and project meetings and the workforce, in order to complete the project, and also includes monitoring and maintaining project progress with effective risk management and issue resolution.
Eligibility Criterion for ECS Datacomms Manager (CTPM) Card
- Must provide a detailed employer reference, confirming experience in project management
- Must have the BTEC Level 4 Professional Award – Certified Telecommunications Project Manager (CTPM)
- And, they must have a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.
