COBIT as an IT Framework
A framework addresses the need of individuals or organizations to manage chaos.
Competing obligations overwhelm individuals. Efficient individuals complete the address it by
- create checklists
- multitask to prioritize work
- identify key tasks
Similarly, in organizations due to increased reliance on IT, a structured approach to manage and govern IT is needed. This is provided by Governance frameworks. With the evolution in IT, frameworks have also progressed.
COBIT
COBIT expands to Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology. It is a governance and management framework. COBIT establishes the controls necessary for IT governance.
It helps companies in assessing the strength of their controls against the organization’s strategic direction. As an example, the framework provides the captain of a ship, with the information that allows him or her to keep the ship on course. COBIT has undergone evolution to address the various technological changes. It has evolved from a control based guidance to guidance for governance and management of I&T infrastructure.
COBIT helps to identify business goals, align those goals with the IT goals and assess their alignment to support the organization’s goals. It also helps to define a desired target state. We can also use other frameworks like ITIL, ISO 20000 but after finalizing the strategic direction.
