Major differences between COBIT 5 and COBIT 2019
COBIT is a framework to manage and govern the I&T infrastructure. It has evolved to address the changing digital landscape. It provides governance and management of the I&T infrastructure for the organizations. COBIT was first released in 1996 and evolving to COBIT 5 and the lates COBIT 2019.

COBIT 5
It was released by ISACA in 2012 and was an evolution to COBIT4.1. The framework has five governance principles and 37 processes. COBIT 5 uses Manage terminology for management processes and ensure terminology for governance processes. It does not have governance framework principles and design factors. It offers enablers and measures performance as per the ISO/IEC 33000.
COBIT 5.0 evolved from COBIT 4.1, to provide enterprise governance and management for the then-latest I&T infrastructure. along with other ISACA resources, COBIT 5.0 addressed the organizational needs, meeting performance and compliance .
With inclusion of CMMi and with advancements in information and technology infrastructure, the new COBIT was released.
COBIT 2019
COBIT 2019 is an updated version of COBIT 5. It covers
- Essential elements consisting of data, projects and compliance
- It enables the global governance community to propose changes to the framework
- Flexible for both problem solving or enterprise-wide adoption
The new framework has six governance principles and 40 processes. The framework uses Managed terminology for management processes and ensured terminology for governance processes. The latest framework has the addition of governance framework principles and design factors. It offers enablers as components and measures performance as per the CMMI. It also offers a governance system design workflow for implementation.
COBIT 2019 Evolution
It evolved to better address the digital challenges of managing and governing the I&T infrastructure. After COBIT 5, the digital landscape has seen many changes especially related to cloud computing and security.
