- Expands to Border Gateway Protocol
- BGP v4 is used by Internet as routing protocol
- Similar to a postal service for Internet.
- After a letter received in mailbox, BGP processes it and selects fast, efficient route to deliver it to recipient.
- Provides data routing on Internet.
- The Internet is a network of networks;
- It’s composed of many smaller networks called autonomous systems (AS) and are a large pool of routers run by a single organization as a single post office.
- AS’s usually belong to ISP
- Routes are exchanged and traffic is transmitted over Internet using external BGP or eBGP.
- AS’s can also use internal version of BGP to route through their internal networks, using internal BGP, or iBGP
