Snowball and Snowball Edge
In this, we will learn the concepts of Snowball and Snowball Edge.

AWS Snowball
- Migrate bulk data from on-premises storage and Hadoop clusters to S3 buckets.
- Has an HDFS client, to migrate data directly from Hadoop clusters into an S3 bucket.
- To migrate,
- create a job in the AWS Management Console
- a Snowball appliance will be automatically shipped to you.
- Then, connect to local network,
- Use the Snowball client to select and transfer the file directories to the Snowball device.
- After data transfer, the Snowball’s E-Ink shipping label will automatically update.
- Ship the device back to AWS.
- Upon receipt at AWS, data is transferred from Snowball to S3 bucket.
- Snowball client uses AES-256-bit encryption.
- Encryption keys are never shipped with the Snowball device
AWS Snowball Edge
- It is a type of Snowball device with on-board storage and compute power for select AWS capabilities
- an undertake local processing and edge-computing workloads
- can transfer data between local environment and AWS
- devices have three options for device configurations
- storage optimized
- compute optimized
- with GPU
- Encryption is enforced
- import or export data between local environments and Amazon S3
- can cluster Snowball Edge devices
