How are the questions developed for the exam?

Multiple-choice questions are based on the Foundation Level and Advanced Level tests. Each question of multiple-choice consists of a question stem and a list of potential alternatives (solutions) and can be either single or multiple answers (Pick-N).  There are 4 suggested options for a single-answer style question, of which one, and only one, is correct.  The candidate is presented with 5 suggested options for a Pick-N style question, with 2 correct options to be chosen.

I lost my ISTQB® certificate, how can I get a new copy?

Please contact the Exam Provider or the Member Board that issued your certificate. A new copy will need to be paid for.

Where and when can I take an exam?

Exams are offered by the ISTQB® local Member Boards and Exam Providers. Please contact them for information on exam dates, applicable fees and booking information.

What types of exam formats are available for the Advanced Level Technical Analyst exam?

Examinations are available in paper-based or electronic device formats. Both alternatives are not offered by all ISTQB® Member Boards and Exam Providers. Ask your local ISTQB® Member Board or Exam Provider which alternatives they provide for the various test levels.

Are there any prerequisites to take an ISTQB® exam?

The applicant must possess the relevant Foundation Level Certificate (Core or Specialist) obtained by passing the relevant Foundation Level exam in order to take an Advanced Level exam (Core or Specialist). It may be appropriate to prove the candidate’s possession of the Foundation Level Certificate. Before taking any advanced test, ISTQB® also recommends the practical experience.

The applicant must hold the required Advanced Level Credential, as indicated for that particular Expert Level exam, to take the Expert Level exam. The Advanced Level Test Manager credential is required for the currently published Expert syllabus (‘Improving the Testing Process’ and ‘Test Manager’). The required Expert Level Certificates are shown in the “Expert Level Module Overview” guide. At least 7 years of practical experience is also recommended by ISTQB®.

Are there any rules to be followed during the exam?

An approved proctor (invigilator), who will distribute printed material (for paper-based examination) or make material accessible electronically, supervises each test (computer-based).No study material or electronic device (including cell phones and smartwatches) not issued by the Exam Provider can be used by the applicant. Only plain paper and basic calculators that are not programmable are allowed. 

How can I demonstrate the possession of an ISTQB® Certificate?

The paper or electronic certificate that was supplied to you can be viewed. In addition, your name may be included on your ISTQB® Member Board or Exam Provider Online List of Certificate Holders if available and if you approve it. 

What is the ISTQB® Successful Candidate Register (SCR)?

The ISTQB® Active Candidate Register acknowledges the achievement of candidates who have been awarded an ISTQB® certificate and have been approved to include their data.  For details about yourself, you can look for: 

  • Name of yours; 
  • Your certificate (e.g. CTFL) level; 
  • The date for certification; 
  • Body of Certification; 
  • The nation of Emission; 
  • Certificate number (for confidentiality purposes, this will be partly masked); 
  • Day of expiry (if applicable).

Is there any validity period for this certification?

ISTQB® Expert Level Certificates are valid for 5 years and can be extended by either review or completion of 200 Credential Extension Credits (CEC). In a variety of ways, CECs can be accomplished, like (e.g.)

  • Perform a technical practice for research 
  • Take a research course that is applicable 
  • Attend a conference on research 
  • Present at a meeting on research 
  • Teach a related course for testing 
  • Write a book or paper on research 
  • Participate actively in a working group including NB (Northern Blades), SIGRIST (Specialist)

I have passed an ISTQB® exam, but I am not listed in the Successful Candidate Register. What do I have to do to be registered?

Individuals possessing an ISTQB® certificate may not be identified until the Active Applicant Register is released, so please contact the Member Board that approved your certificate for details about how to add your certificate (Note: terms and conditions may vary by Board).
