About the Life in the UK

Life in the U.K is a computer-based exam intended to evaluate the knowledge of those who wish to apply for indefinite leave to remain. It’s meant to approve that the applicant has sufficient knowledge of British life and has sufficient English proficiency. This test is intended to determine the applicant’s knowledge of life in the United Kingdom. The main purpose of the test is to examine the candidates’ knowledge of The British culture (covering every single detail). It simultaneously fulfills the language requirement. It was introduced back on 1, November 2005 for naturalization. Also, the test can be taken in languages other than English, with legally sufficient knowledge of Scottish Gaelic or Welsh to fulfill the language requirement. While the language requirement can be met by having an English qualification at B1, B2, C1, C2 level or a degree taught/ researched in English.

Then in 2007, the book got revised and the test was changed to be based on chapter 2-6 of the respected book. At the time of introduction, the study material was primarily about England, while the second edition contained more details about aspects of the life in the United Kingdom and then the test was molded according to the location of the applicant. E.g. if the applicant is from Manchester then s/he will be asked about the Manchester Parliament and not about England Assembly.

Who is eligible?

There are very few exemptions when it comes to applying for UK citizenship. People who are under 18 years in age or over 65 years are exempted. • If you are suffering from a long or permanent mental or physical condition then you might be exempt.
• If your long-term illness restricts your mobility and ability to take language classes, or

Where can one take the test?

There are 60 centers in the UK and you can choose one of the five closest where you live and if the center isn’t close to your place then you won’t be allowed to sit for the exam and no refund will be provided. You’ll be provided with a choice of testing centers at the time of booking. You need to take the test as a part of your application for naturalization or say British citizenship or settlement in the U.K. You must book your test at least 3 days prior and it costs you £50.

How to Register?

Once you are ready to take up the test you have to register with the Life in the UK online booking service. In order to book the test, you need to provide with valid ID proof, a debit or credit card to make the payment and also an email address to register your account.

Forms of ID accepted

The following ID proofs are required to book the test:

• UK photocard driving license (it can be full or provisional)
• Passport (it can be out of date)
• European Identity card

At the Test

The duration of the test is 45 minutes and 24 questions are asked in total based on the respected handbook. The test is multiple choice questions based. You need to give 18 correct answers to qualify the test. You must bring the same ID that you used while booking the test. Address proof is required that has your name and Postcode on it. While it must be dated within the 3 months of the day of your test. It can be any of the following:

• Electricity bill or water bill
• Council Tax bill
• UK photocard driving license
• A letter from your home office with your name and address on it.
  

If you qualify the test

You must score 75% or more to qualify the test. Once you clear the exam, you’ll receive a pass notification letter. You need to send the pass letter original with your citizenship or settlement application to prove you passed.

*if in case you lost your original letter you need to contact the Home Office, they won’t give you a new letter but will guide you what to do or what can be done.

If you fail the test

You need to wait for 7 days before taking the retest, while you can appear for the test as many time as you need. You need to pay again every time you book the test.
